Once you complete the install, restart your browser. Then, press Ctrl+Shift+K or select View - Sidebar - View Search Sidebar, to activate the sidebar.
Some of the problems with Firefox 1.5 and the Advanced Search Sidebar have been caused by the inclusion of this patch (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=289362) to the underlying Mozilla internet search code. Hopefully when this patch (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=318889) is accepted it will fix the problems.
